You can check the Gladiator Arena section every month. Someone usually starts prediction threads in Guild Battle and Hero vs Hero Battle subforums.
You can usually check the Guild Ladder on guildwars.com (under Competitive) and list the top guilds. If any show up in the selection list for predictions, pick them. 1v1 is harder as the players tend to change their names every month. If you are not in the know, then it's just throwing darts.

a smurf is when a high ranked guild make another guild to play gvg's with and not be bothered about losing rating.

Take a look at Obs (press B when in town/outpost/guild hall). See which teams are playing.
Closer to prediction time, there are generally threads made in the Gvg form, with ideas on who to predict. A Smurf is generally a high-ranked team that has created an alternate guild. Reasons for 'smurfing' range from not wanting to lose rating on their current high-ranked team, to simply wanting to *play*. QP are qualifier points. Teams that play in daily GvG matches are awarded QPs for competing. You need at least 20 QPs to compete in the Monthly Tournament. Higher amounts of QPs don't necessarily determine how well a guild will do, it just shows you who's been playing the most. (Granted, those practicing a lot will generally tend to do better). |

You get five points (equal one key) just for participating each month. How many total depends on your knowledge and your luck.
People who follow the GvG and/or Hero matches and spend time watching in Observer Mode, have the knowledge base to win more points. People who have a lack of interest in PvP tend to win less. As with most things, the more effort you put into it, the more reward you will get.
